Are you getting tired of seeing pictures of wooly sheep in the snow? I’d planned to start shearing beginning of March but I’m going to put it off until the snow is melted and temps come up above freezing. Since we aren’t expecting lambs this year there is no huge rush to get them sheared early. I’m tired of cold weather, but at least the snow is pretty.
The Never Ending Snow
So far this week we’ve gotten about a foot of accumulated snow. The temperatures aren’t supposed to get above 30 till this weekend, so I don’t expect our snowy vistas to change much for the rest of the week. We are lucky that we haven’t had any ice- just lots of soft fluffy snow. Of course, the downside to dry, fluffy snow is that it doesn’t form a crust on top to walk on and it doesn’t pack down very well. So when you walk through it, each step takes you a foot into the snow. Avi loves the snow. She loves to plow directly through it, to roll in it and to smash her face in it. Her injured eye is mostly healed now but it still itches like crazy and is irritated so I think the cold snow must feel wonderful against her face. We have to keep a close eye on her to make sure she doesn’t scratch it on anything hard, but a little bit of snow in her cone doesn’t seem to hurt, and makes her very happy. The flock has spent the last several days mostly cooped up in the barn. We don’t lock them in so they CAN go out into the pasture but for the most part they have stayed inside the barn or right outside using the barn as a wind break. You can see in the picture above how the pasture is almost perfectly smooth and free from tracks. The one line of tracks is new today- before that it was pristine for days. I think that everyone is getting tired of being cooped up. Today Francine and Elizabeth wouldn’t stop “arguing” with each other and generally acting cranky. They weren’t getting into full on head slamming fights, but kept butting heads, pushing each other around with their necks and pawing at each other with their front legs. Will the flock impatiently waits for their frozen world to thaw, I am busy inside packing and getting ready to go to Louisville this weekend for the Bourbon Classic. I’m also pet sitting a friend’s pug today. Think she wants to come with me?
